Accidents in Kenya have increased in the past few days and this has resulted in several deaths. These deaths have always left families of the deceased with immense pain and grief. 

Due to the rise of such painful occasions, the government has always tried different ways to curb accidents but numbers of deaths have remained constant. 

According to NTSA, at least 3,000 people die from road accidents in Kenya each year. 

In this segment, Times Digital explores the most famous black spots among other issues associated with accidents in Kenya. 

What is the main cause of accidents in Kenya?

It’s clear that most traffic accidents aren’t caused due to unqualified (inexperienced) drivers but decision making of the men behind the wheel plays a big role. Actually around 94% of accidents on our roads are mainly caused due to human error. 

So, drivers might actually find themselves to blame for the majority of accidents in Kenya hence highlighting the causes (below) will help them be aware and cautious while driving. 

Pedestrians, weather or state of our roads are also responsible for some of the accidents in Kenya. 

Here are the major causes 

1.Over speeding

2.Distraction to drivers 

3.Avoiding  safety gears eg seat belts and helmets for motorbikes

4. Overtaking and using the wrong lanes 

5. Avoiding the use of instructions from traffic lights

6. Unworthy road vehicles such that the motor vehicle has no gear brakes or lights. 

In addition to the causes (for accidents) there are several black spots that are notorious for accidents in Kenya.

These are places/locations that are well known to attract more road accidents as opposed to other areas.

According to Kenya Police,  accident black spots  in Kenya are spread across the country as seen below. 

• Rift Valley region – Salgaa (Molo GSU camp), Mbaruk road station at Gilgil and Kinungi-Naivasha among other places. 

• Nairobi county- Westlands (Kabete road & Museum roundabout), Kasarani (GSU stretch), Mombasa road (near 

• Nyanza region- Daraja Mbili-Mbondo, Awasi-Ahero Road, Migori-Kakrao Road, Kiboswa-Kisumu Road and  Junction, Oyugis-Katitu Road among other places.

• Central Kenya- Thika Blue Post, Limuru-Uplands, Kibirigwi-Sagana and Sagana Bridge Road just to name a few. 
• Coast region- Tsavo-Maungu section, Kilifi vipingo road and Maktau-Taveta road among other places.
