What is a post-mortem?
A post-mortem is simply an operation that is carried out on a dead person so as to determine the real cause of one’s death whereby it is performed by a specialised and qualified medical doctor known as a pathologist.
What happens in a post-mortem?
The pathologist examines the outside of the body, opens the body and performs an organ examination. They usually take tissue samples and more rarely may remove organs for detailed examination to establish the cause of death and return the organs, but occasionally need to keep them for further tests.
How long does it take before a body is released after a post-mortem?
In order to determine the timing of release of the body into the chosen funeral home, an account shall be made of the time required for carrying out a detailed examination and collection of bodily evidence. Generally, remains can be released to the funeral home of the family’s choice within 24 to 48 hours of examination, even if the reason and manner of death are still being investigated.
Can you see a body after a post mortem?
Families are given the opportunity to see the deceased’s body after a post-mortem analysis. There could be obvious scars from the extensive examination procedure, even though the person’s appearance usually stays the same as it was before the test.
How Much Is Post-Mortem In Kenya?
According to the recommendations made by The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), postmortem examination fees in Kenya should normally be paid between KES 20,000 and KES 150,000, with an average of about KES 50,000.
