Apart from standing out as a leader both in politics and among students, he boasts an impressive academic record that continues to draw widespread attention.
In this segment, Times Digital Kenya takes a closer look at Babu Owino’s impressive academic résumé.
Early Life and Education Background
Born Paul Ongili Owino on October 10, 1989, the MP grew up in the Nyalenda slums of Kisumu. Babu Owino was raised by a single mother, Dorcas Owino, after his father died when he was still very young.
To survive, Owino’s mother sold illicit brew (chang’aa) and faced numerous challenges, as police often demanded bribes from her.
When he reached school-going age, Babu Owino’s mother, together with other family members, decided to do whatever it took to ensure he pursued his education. The family made significant sacrifices to support his studies.

Babu Owino’s KCSE grade was sufficient to qualify him for higher education, and in 2008 he joined the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Actuarial Science. He graduated in 2012 with First Class Honours.
Afterward, he immediately pursued a Master’s in Actuarial Science, then an LLB Law degree, and finally a Master’s in Law, all at the University of Nairobi.
Speaking to local newspaper, The Star, Babu Owino revealed that he dedicated each of these academic achievements to his family members. He said his first degree was for his mother, the Master’s in Actuarial Science for his sister, the LLB Law degree for his brother, and his final Master’s in Law was dedicated to himself.
