For those who have followed his political journey closely, they are aware that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna rose through the ranks as a young member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

As he became a sensation, with his vocal stance winning the hearts of many supporters prior to the 2017 General Election, Sifuna’s spark in politics under the mentorship of Raila Odinga was clearly evident.

Having been in active politics for less than a decade, his intelligence has often been in the spotlight, with many curious about his educational background.

In this segment, Times Digital Kenya highlights Edwin Sifuna’s educational background and the career path that led to his rise as Nairobi Senator.

Early life and education

Born on May 22, 1982, and raised in Kakamega, in western Kenya, Edwin Sifuna spent most of his early life in the region alongside his siblings.

Growing up, Sifuna witnessed many hardships, but this did not deter him from pursuing his education.

For his primary education, he attended Kakamega Township Primary School from 1988 to 1995, when he sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

His marks in the final exams were sufficient to join secondary school, and he enrolled at Musingu High School. He attended the school from 1996 to 1999, obtaining his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Sifuna continued to excel academically, achieving grades that allowed him to join university. He enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree, graduating in 2006.

Thereafter, Sifuna pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, completing it in 2007.

Career

Edwin Sifuna first realized his political calling when he voted for the Kenyan Constitution in 2010. However, even after voting and hoping for change in the country, Sifuna noticed that many Kenyans at the grassroots were dissatisfied with how the Constitution was being implemented. Experiencing this firsthand played a key role in his decision to venture into politics.

From 2013 to 2016, he worked with the late Raila Odinga’s Coalition for Reforms & Democracy (CORD) as a Technical/Advisory Committee Member.

When Raila and other principals formed another coalition, the National Super Alliance (NASA), Edwin Sifuna continued to serve in the same capacity from 2016 to 2021.

He first showed interest in an elective seat in 2017 when he vied for the Nairobi Senator position but lost to Johnson Sakaja by a narrow margin. This increased his popularity and helped him secure the role of ODM Secretary General, a position he held until early 2026.
