KANU party leader Gideon Moi, the son of Kenya’s second President Daniel Arap Moi, runs big businesses across the country, having been the heir of Moi’s vast fortune.
With the Moi family’s fortune reportedly valued at over US$3 billion (KSh 335 billion), Gideon runs the majority of the family’s investments.
Following his father Daniel Moi’s death in February 2020, Gideon Moi, despite being his youngest son, was symbolically handed the family’s political baton, known as the rungu (club) or fimbo ya nyayo, to continue the family’s political legacy.
Here, Times Digital Kenya explores one of the business ventures that Gideon Moi runs, inherited from his late father.
Gideon Moi’s Restaurant
Having invested in the hospitality industry, one of the former Baringo Senator’s key ventures is The Lord Erroll Restaurant. Located in Runda, the restaurant was initially established by Felix Huwler, Michael Craig, and Hans Stoecklin in 1997.

The trio named it after Josslyn Victor Hay, the 22nd Earl of Erroll, a British noble who resided in Kenya during the 1930s and 1940s, paying homage to a bygone era of elegance and sophistication.
The founders owned the restaurant until 2013, when it was acquired by the Moi family. According to a report by Business Daily, the Moi family acquired the restaurant for KSh 300 million and it is under the management of Gideon Moi’s wife, Zahra Balewa.
After the acquisition, the Moi family renovated the restaurant, bringing it up to high standards.
