After being elected as the 52nd president of the Law Society of Kenya, Charles Kanjama has opened up about his biggest inspiration. According to Kanjama, his most notable inspiration to become a lawyer was not inspired in courtrooms but at home.
During a past interview in 2022, the newly elected LSK President reflected on his biggest motivation, his mother. Kanjama recalled his mother’s talkative personality and how her simple debating skills silently prepared him for future legal practice.
“Although I wasn’t aware at the time, looking back, my inspiration to study law came from my mother. At home, I remember her being so talkative. I copied her, started reading a lot, and debated just like her, not knowing I was preparing for the future.” Kanjama says
Kanjama, born in 1977, attended Strathmore School for his secondary education, where, apart from excelling in the sciences, he honed his conversational and debating skills. This background became a favorable backdrop for his future legal studies.
In 2001, Kanjama graduated from the University of Nairobi with a second-class law degree. Subsequently, he undertook a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law, after which he was certified to practice law.
Two years later, in 2003, he was admitted to the bar. After gaining experience in legal roles at local law firms, he took the initiative in 2006 to co-found Kanjama & Muma Advocates. Here, he held the position of managing partner.
During his decorated legal profession, Kanjama has applied his expertise in top legal cases, including stints as amicus curiae at Kenya’s Supreme Court as well as Election Petitions.
As Kanjama takes the helm of LSK as the president, he looks forward to the culmination of his journey as a legal professional, a milestone that started at home. His unlikely story depicts rare instances where insignificant influences from the family setup can inspire future professional endeavors.
