In the early 2000s, the Longombas music group ruled the Kenyan airwaves, releasing hit after hit. From Dondosa to Piga Makofi to Vuta Pumz, their songs not only entertained but also educated, thus earning them a spot as one of the most popular music groups at the time.

Unfortunately, despite having won the hearts of Kenyans and being thought to be at their peak, by the mid to late 2000s, the Longombas were nowhere to be seen in the music industry. They relocated from Kenya to the United States, where they pursued different ventures.

For Lovy Longomba, one of the duo, his path eventually led him to become a man of God, and he founded a Prophetic ministry. In this piece, Times Digital Kenya looks at his journey to becoming a prophet after having been a secular musician in his early days.

The Longombas’ Music Journey

At a time when the Kenyan music industry was undergoing a transformation towards a more modern style, a duo of twins emerged known as the Longombas. Interestingly, what caught the attention of many Kenyans was the fact that they were actually twin brothers.

Starting their career in 2002, the Longombas released their debut album, Chukua, in 2005, which consisted of hit songs such as Vuta Pumz and Piga Makofi.

In the year of their debut album, they were named the Best Group in East Africa in two different categories by the Kora Awards, as well as at the Chaguo la Teeniez Awards in Kenya.

In 2006, they achieved even more success, winning awards including Best Group from Kenya, Best Social Responsibility, and Best Song in various categories at the Kisima Awards. Additionally, the Longombas were feted at the 2006 Tanzania Music Awards for Best East African Album, Chukua.

The duo then relocated from Kenya to the USA in 2007 before releasing another hit song, Queen, while there. Apart from singing, the Longombas also wrote songs for international artists.

How Lovy, one of the duo transitioned into a pastor

In 2013, Lovy decided to leave the secular world and turn to Christianity after what he said was an encounter with Jesus.

Lovy Longomba then immediately started a prayer group that later evolved into the Revelation Church of Jesus Christ. Located in Los Angeles, United States, the church mainly focuses on prophetic ministry, healing, and deliverance.

The former secular musician reportedly bought the church for $8,075,000 (approximately Kshs 800 Million).

Apart from his physical church, Lovy Longomba extends his ministry to social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, where he shares his journey from musician to prophet.

He is also involved in charity work, personally funding donations from his own resources. In addition to his ministry, Lovy Longomba has ventured into the real estate and education sectors.

“I have businesses I run in the real estate and education sectors. I also do a lot of charity work that I personally fund. When God blesses you, it is important to help those who are vulnerable,” Lovy said in a past interview.
