One of their standout projects is an upcoming city featuring residential and industrial areas, schools, and commercial spaces. Furthermore, the development, which is anticipated to rival other major projects like Tatu City, has a private airstrip.

Times Digital Kenya takes a deeper look at the development and the airport owned by the Kenyatta family.

Northlands City

Sitting on approximately 11,800 acres, Northlands City, a project by the Kenyattas, is located in Ruiru, Mt. Kenya region, about 15 km from Nairobi city center.

Once complete, the development of the private city is estimated to cost around Sh500 billion and will house at least 270,000 Kenyans.

Out of the 11,000 acres, 3,750 acres will be used for residential development, with the middle class being the main priority, alongside housing for families and senior couples.

Additionally, there will be sections set aside to cater for low-income earners, aimed at controlling the growth of unplanned slums in the city.

Aside from residential housing, Northlands City is anticipated to feature a world-class stadium, urban commercial centers, recreational facilities, hotels, schools, and hospitals, among others. These amenities will help residents enjoy a comfortable life, just like in other modern urban cities.

Private Airport

Inside Northlands City, the Kenyatta family reportedly owns a private airport located at the heart of the development project.

According to reports by a local media outlet, the airstrip, visible on Google satellite imagery at coordinates 1°11’29″S, 36°58’42″E and marked as Northlands Aerodrome, is said to be a domestic airport.

Although it is not yet clear whether residents of the city will use the airport, private planes and jets can take off from it. At the end of the runway, there is an unmarked structure thought to be an aircraft hangar.
