Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s nephew, Jackson Kihara Gachagua, will be serving a 20-year prison sentence following a court conviction.
Having been behind bars for several years now, Kiharu, the son of former Nyeri Governor, the late Nderitu Gachagua, was back in court on May 21 challenging the charges and maintaining his innocence.
Which crime was he convicted of?
Despite coming from a powerful political family in Nyeri, Jackson Kihara will serve a 20-year sentence at Manyani Maximum Security Prison over links to a robbery with violence case.
His case relates to an incident that occurred on the night of April 27, 2015, when Kihara, jointly with another person, allegedly robbed a man identified as David Gitari Kinyunjuri.
The robbery reportedly took place at the Kobil Petrol Station along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi. He was accused of using a wire as a dangerous weapon to violently steal a Toyota Axio valued at KSh 650,000.
His Defense
Kihara argues that he did not steal the Toyota Axio and that he had been driving the car, which belonged to his father, long before his father’s death in 2017.
According to Jackson, he claims the incident was entirely fabricated and that he was targeted and framed by close family members.
He also alleges that it was all because he refused to surrender his father’s estate documents to his uncle, Rigathi Gachagua.
While appearing at the Milimani Law Courts on May 21, Jackson Kihara petitioned for a review of his conviction, affirming that he was framed and that he had new material that would prove the prosecution’s case was engineered.
