President William Ruto kicked off his Mt. Kenya tour on April 1 as he commissioned development projects in some parts of the region. The head of state was accompanied by a section of leaders from the central region, including Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi and Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo. Surprisingly, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga joined the Kenya Kwanza brigade as they traversed some parts of the county.

Speaking of Nyeri, this county has been a serious bone of contention between President Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua. From being the best allies to fierce rivals within a space of two years, Gachagua dared the president to visit his home county in the past few weeks. Nonetheless, Ruto took the bull by its own horns and has now pitched camp in the region, where he enjoyed massive support in the previous general election.
During his tour in Nyeri county on Tuesday, William Ruto inspected several projects, including Last Mile Connectivity in Kieni and Naromoru ESP Market as well as the commissioning of the classrooms block at Naromoru Primary School.

Thereafter, President Ruto made several stop overs where he interacted with locals of Nyeri. Fortunately, Ruto was warmly received as residents of Rigathi Gachagua’s home turf turned out in large numbers. During the rallies, Ruto promised to prioritize development projects in the region within a short period of time.
In addition to Ruto’s address to the Nyerians, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, MP Kimani Ichungwah, and Mutahi Kahiga pledged to work closely with the government. William Ruto’s grand reception in Nyeri has sparked mixed reactions among netizens.

Before Ruto’s visit to the central region, it was perceived that his bad relationship with Gachagua would play a role in how he would be received in Mt. Kenya, particularly in the former’s home county.
