Nyeri Poll Reveals Close Contest Between Ruto and Gachagua

As the country approaches the 2027 General Election, the battle for the Mt Kenya region remains between President William Ruto and his former Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.

Nyeri, the home county of the DCP party leader and a vote-rich area, is expected to be one of the main battlegrounds between Gachagua and Ruto in Mt Kenya. To determine who edges ahead in command, Mizani Africa has conducted a poll on presidential preference.

In a post on social media on Monday, 1 December, Mizani released a recently conducted poll in Nyeri featuring President Ruto, Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua, Ndindi Nyoro and David Maraga.

According to the poll, former Deputy President Gachagua leads with 25.5%, while President William Ruto follows closely with 20.3%.

“Nyeri County’s presidential preference results reveal a competitive and shifting political landscape. Rigathi Gachagua leads with 25.5%. President William Ruto follows closely at 20.3%, maintaining a solid base but facing a more fragmented support pattern than in previous cycles,” Mizani Africa stated.

In the poll, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s popularity in Nyeri stands at 15.3%, Fred Matiang’i at 8.7%, and Ndindi Nyoro at 7.2%. Martha Karua comes a distant sixth with 3%, followed by David Maraga with 1%, while 19.0% remain undecided.

Mizani Africa further stated that voters in Nyeri County remain open to persuasion, as they have not yet firmly aligned themselves.

This comes as the United Opposition, led by Gachagua and Kalonzo, is keen to unseat President William Ruto in 2027 as they bank not only on the support of Nyeri County but also on the entire Mt Kenya region.

On the other hand, Ruto seeks to solidify his support in the Central region, where he enjoyed massive backing in the previous General Election, helping him become president.

For instance, in the recent MP by-elections in Mbeere North, the President’s candidate emerged victorious, giving a clear indication of his strength in the Mt Kenya region.
