Kenyans React to Opposition Line-up Featuring Kalonzo, Natembeya & Matiangi

As the 2027 General Election draws closer, the opposition is crafting strategies to unseat President William Ruto.

According to senior political reporter Stephen Letoo, the proposed United Opposition lineup features Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as president and Governor George Natembeya as deputy president.

Former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is listed as Prime Minister, with Eugene Wamalwa and Martha Karua taking up the positions of Speaker of the National Assembly and Speaker of the Senate, respectively.

Interestingly, the immediate former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, is said to hold a 50% stake in the proposed government.

“1. Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka ~ President

2. Hon. George Natembeya – Deputy

3. Hon. Fred Matiang’i – Prime Minister

4. Hon. Eugene Wamalwa – Speaker, NA

5. Hon. Martha Karua – Speaker, Senate

6. Hon. Rigathi Gachagua – 50% Stake,”—Stephen Letoo’s post reads

Letoo’s post has since stirred heated reactions among Kenyans online, with many terming the alliance “Dead on Arrival.” Here is a sample of the reactions.

City lawyer Wahome Thuku questioned the legality of the proposed lineup, asking, “Where is the prime minister in the constitution?”

Another social media user argued that Rigathi Gachagua’s inclusion would ultimately weaken the alliance, writing, “That shares man will be the end of the purported united opposition.” — Lemiso Media House

Former Bomet County Woman Representative Joyce Korir also dismissed the deal, declaring, “Dead on arrival… no deal!”

Nina Sylvan questioned the idea of Gachagua’s “50% stake,” saying, “50% stake, kwani Kenya ni yake? Anyway, that lineup will form a very good opposition in 2027 and beyond—after elections.”

On his part, Bony Nyamweya criticized the proposal, calling it “a raw deal for Kenyans.” He added, “The flagbearer has to be Matiang’i. There’s nothing like a 50% stake—Kenya is bigger than Wamunyoro.”
