When a wound in his big toe refused to heal in 1977,Bob Marley went to see a doctor. More examinations revealed that the patient had malignant melanoma. He refused to have his toe removed as his doctors advised, arguing that it was against his Rastafarian principles however, suggest that his refusal was motivated more by the potential negative impact on his dance abilities. While Bob Marley worked, the cancer was kept hidden from the wider population.

It soon became clear that Marley didn’t have much time to live, however, so the musician set out to return to his beloved Jamaica one last time. Sadly, he would not manage to complete the journey, dying in Miami, Florida, on May 11, 1981.

Marley was awarded the Order of Merit by the Jamaican government shortly before his death. In 1980, he received the United Nations Medal of Peace. Marley was accorded a hero’s farewell by the people of Jamaica. More than 30,000 people attended the musician’s memorial service at the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica.
