Following a series of United Opposition rallies in the Ukambani region, former Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga said that President William Ruto stands no chance in the region. With locals of the region turning up in large numbers during the rallies, they overwhelmed the venues, signaling strong support for the opposition.

In a social media post on March 31, while continuing her criticism of the head of state, Millicent Omanga claimed that Ruto won’t even manage to get 5% of the Ukambani votes in the 2027 General Election.

It is perceived that Omanga believes the number of people who showed up during the opposition’s recent rallies in the Lower Eastern region is a reflection of how voters from Ukambani will vote in the next general election.

“Hii Ukambani pia ata 5% Kasongo hawezi pata,” Millicent Omanga said.

This comes a few days after Omanga, a former foot soldier of the President, revealed what led to their fallout.

Speaking to NTV, Omanga said that her rift with Ruto began after he failed to honour commitments he made to women ahead of the 2022 General Election. She termed it a betrayal and hence ditched the Kenya Kwanza camp for the United Opposition.

Her remarks come as Ukambani—considered the backyard of Kalonzo Musyoka—remains a key region as the opposition solidifies support, while Ruto and his team also seek to gain ground.

The Ukambani region, which voted overwhelmingly as a block for Azimio la Umoja in 2022, has a total of at least 1,699,724 voters: Kitui 532,758, Machakos 687,565, and Makueni 479,401.

The region will be a key vote-rich area in the 2027 General Election, giving an upper hand to the opposition, as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka hails from the area.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, during the opposition rally in Makueni County on March 31, slammed the government for what he termed mismanagement of public funds, stating that they will expose any wrongdoing.

“There will be no escape route for ineptitude, theft, or mismanagement of public utilities. What we are witnessing in policy administration represents a historic low for our nation. We will continue to expose lies, looting, corruption, betrayal, callousness, and any other injustices as they occur,” Rigathi Gachagua said.

During the rally, Gachagua was accompanied by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and other leaders in the United Opposition.

Their main agenda was to popularize their political outfit while opposing Ruto. The United Opposition is currently on a five-day tour of the Ukambani region, covering three counties: Makueni, Machakos, and Kitui.
