With considerable wealth and fortune, many lead a lavish lifestyle, but with a net worth of over Sh200 billion, Kenyan tycoon Manu Chandaria is humble compared to his peers.

Would you imagine that with all that wealth, he owns only five suits, three jackets, two pairs of underwear and five pairs of shoes? That’s what Mr. Chandaria has chosen, even with the ability to own thousands of expensive clothes.

Here, Times Digital Kenya explores why Manu Chandaria, who is connected to a multibillion-dollar empire and immense wealth, does not lead a flashy lifestyle or wear fancy clothes.

Manu Chandaria’s Humble Background

Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, who taught Indians to eat simple meals, dress modestly, and strive for self-sufficiency, Manu Chandaria has emulated him even after amassing wealth.

Throughout his four years at the University of Bombay, Manu Chandaria spun thread for handlooms for an hour each day.

Up to the time he left India for Kenya, he had two pairs of trousers, three shirts, a pair of socks, and two pairs of underwear. Although he could afford as many clothes as he wanted, he chose to live modestly as a follower of Mahatma Gandhi.

“I could have bought as many pairs of socks and shirts as I wanted. We could afford to, but we were followers of Gandhi, so we also lived frugally,” Manu Chandaria said.

Why Chandaria Has Few Pairs of Clothes Even Now

Despite his vast wealth and being considered one of the richest in Kenya, Manu Chandaria has maintained a simple lifestyle inspired from a young age by Mahatma Gandhi.

Another source of inspiration is Roman Catholic nun Mother Teresa, who reportedly visited their home frequently while in India and shared teachings with them.

For Chandaria, who has an estimated net worth of Sh200 billion, he could own as many designer clothes as he wanted from the most expensive and exclusive stores in the world, but he has chosen to keep only a small number.

His wardrobe contains only five suits, no more. When he acquires a new one, he gives the old one to those in need. The same applies to his shoes, socks, and underwear.

For Manu Chandaria, it’s all about giving, and as such, he doesn’t see a reason to have many clothes while others don’t.

“I have 5 suits in my wardrobe. If I buy one, I give out another. I have at least 3 jackets. It’s a lesson about giving,” Dr Manu Chandaria said in a past interview.

In addition to avoiding expensive clothes, Manu Chandaria does not engage in luxurious activities and, moreover, does not eat meat or chicken. He has maintained a life as simple as possible.
