Nowadays, most top TV stations in Kenya have employed sign language interpreters. This is a department that wasn’t prioritized in the past decade and beyond. The introduction of news interpreters has been very effective and has benefited both the media stations and its audience. This is as it has helped TV stations get a wider reach and, at the same time, eased communication with the deaf.

Being a new ‘thing’ in the country, there are few sign-language interpreters in local TV stations; Citizen TV’s Youla Nzale is among the highly ranked. The beautiful media personality is the face of sing-language interpretation on the Royal Media Services TV.

Her face is always in the small ‘box’ on the bottom of the screen during every primetime newscast. Youla Nzale’s dedication and passion in her job have enabled her to become the most sought-after sign language interpreter in Kenya.
Who is Youla Nzale?
Youla is a beloved and charismatic sign language interpreter who works for Citizen TV. She became a household name back in 2019 as she interpreted former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech at the Devolution conference in Kirinyaga County. After the speech, her videos from the event went viral on social media.

She was praised for her passionate interpretation of the deaf. Since then, she has been a favorite of many Kenyans. Youla Nzale is known for her ‘ever smiling’ nature. Also, she seems to be a humble lady.

Her Journey as a Sign Language Interpreter
Before she kicked off her journey in sign language interpretation, Youla Nzale worked as a saleslady at Gilead Enterprise. Here she worked for only 3 months before joining Gedicom Limited as an administrative assistant.

She later joined the Kenya Institute of Management in 2015. Youla’s main job was to translate lectures into Kenyan sign language. To further her passion for sign language interpretation, she joined the University of Nairobi, where she enrolled in a certificate course. She became more enlightened on the field, not knowing that her services would get high demand in the future.
Youla’s journey with Citizen TV
After a few years of furthering her knowledge, Youla Nzale was interviewed by Citizen TV in 2018. However, she initially joined the Royal Media TV station as a freelance sign language interpreter.
During her earlier days at Citizen TV, she wasn’t famous among Kenyans. This as sign language interpretation in Kenya was unheard of. In 2019, everything turned around.

It was at the Devolution conference in Kirinyaga, that her outstanding talent was seen by the majority of Kenyans. Her creative and beautiful sign language interpretation of former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s touched the hearts of many Kenyans. Since then, Youla Nzale has become a public figure.
