113 African Scholars Set to Join Global Universities Under the Equity Leaders Program

Through its chairman, Dr. James Mwangi, Equity Group Foundation has commissioned the airlift of 113 scholars in four countries, including Kenya (82), Uganda (8), Rwanda (21), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2).

The 113 scholars will join 71 universities in 22 countries on 5 continents, including Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Africa.

The scholarships are valued at Ksh. 2,797,026,475. Furthermore, for the duration of four years of their undergraduate studies, scholars will receive a stipend of about Ksh 200,000 to smooth their transition into university life. 

Apart from being beneficiaries of Equity Bank’s paid internship program, the scholars also undertook a comprehensive two-month college counseling program to receive expert guidance on how to navigate and thrive as global scholars.

To date, under the ELP program, 970 scholars have received admissions and scholarships to study at global universities.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Mwangi challenged the scholars to take up the mandate of driving Africa’s socio-economic growth, especially within the group’s African Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Wahu is set to join Harvard University in the USA to study computer science. The young scholar emerged as the best girl in Kenya in the 2022 K.C.S.E. examinations.

Garang Makech


Garang is an ELP scholar who will be joining Bowdoin University in the USA to study computer science. The young scholar was raised at the famous Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Garang later joined Baringo Boys High School, scoring an A of 82 points in KCSE.
