Tribute to Fearless ‘Yaliyotendeka’ Host Waweru Mburu

If you were lucky enough to live in the late 1990s and 2000s, you must have heard of the celebrated media personality Peter Waweru Mburu.

He was famed for hosting the Yaliyotendeka segment on Radio Citizen FM until his death. Waweru Mburu became a household name in Kenya due to his boldness and courage to call out the government when necessary.

However, despite his fame, millions of Mburu’s fans have been curious to know more about his life after his departure.

Waweru Mburu education background

Though Mburu was very popular in Kenya, he managed to keep his life private, and the details of his education are not well known. Times Digital Kenya is fortunate to report that the late legendary journalist attended Mukuyu School, completing his studies around 1983.

The media guru joined the University of Nairobi while still working at Citizen TV, and he graduated with a degree in development communication.

In addition, he studied further after joining the Radio Netherlands Training Center, obtaining a degree in management.

Career

After completing his secondary education, Waweru Mburu returned to Mukuyu School in 1986, but as a teacher. He worked at the school for several years before joining Royal Media Services in 1996.

A youthful Mburu was then handed a role to play at the media station owned by business mogul Sk Macharia. During that time, Radio Citizen didn’t have a professional studio, but Mburu stood with the owner and coped with the situation.

Some of the shows that he hosted include the famous Yaliyotendeka (popular for fearless criticism of wrongdoers in society), the Wembe wa Citizen, and the Cheche show at Citizen TV (where he was a panelist).

In his show, Waweru Mburu was the voice of the less privileged in society, while he openly accused oppressors without fear.

The main aim of Yaliyotendeka was to criticize individuals or even the government when they were making mistakes.

After working at Royal Media Services for over a decade, Waweru Mburu gained vast experience, which earned him a huge role at Radio Citizen, where he was promoted to be the head of the company.

What happened to Waweru Mburu?

However, after serving the company for almost two decades, Waweru Mburu succumbed to gastric cancer, aged 51.

Sadly, this was the end of his fearless and outspoken career in the media industry. Waweru Mburu is still considered one of the best journalists to grace the media in the past few decades.
