Mr. Collins Leitich, a businessman, has been running his own police station at Chebarus village, Eldoret, Rift Valley.

Interestingly, he established the police patrol without the approval of the inspector general. A local media station reports that Mr. Collins went to the extent of branding the station with the Kenya police colors.

The report further reveals that the political activist who is well known as Chepkulei used to police the Kesses area, where he handled cases of individuals found with unlicensed timber products from the Cengalo forest. Surprisingly, the area chief didn’t even recognize that the police station was illegal.

It existed for at least six months. The station had an office and detention cells. Thankfully, Police officers discovered the illegal activity on 8 March before reporting it to Kamuyu Police.
“We were surprised to find a fully set-up facility painted in police colors, yet no authorization had been granted for such an establishment in this area,” the police report reads, as reported by Nation.
It is further reported that he is a close ally to a former member of Parliament from the area; thus, residents believed that his police station was genuine.
As of now, the relevant authority has assured residents that the issue will be dealt with. Investigations are in progress.

Benjamin Mwanthi, Uasin Gishu County police commander, revealed that a team of local security officers is expected to visit the area and garner more information about the shocking issue. Nonetheless, Mr. Mwanthi said that he had no information about the ‘fake police station.’.
